General Information

We are pleased to bring you yet another unique and exclusive system in UO, runeword making. This is a crafting system similar to runeword making from Diablo 2.

Head to Gokuraku, in the Elysian Islands and find Hephaestus, the God of the Forge. He will give you a quest that rewards you with his notes that allow you to start runemaking.

Next to him you'll notice a stone that can be used to purchase runes (a major gold sink). If you haven't found a Mie rune yet, you can buy one for 10mil gp. Then hand it to Hephaestus and he will give you his notes on runeword forging.

Hephaestus' notes can be used to combine lower tier runes to the next tier, or split a rune to the lower tier, or craft a runeword if you have the right runes!

The following items can be imbued with a runeword: Talisman, Ring, Necklace, Bracelet, Earrings, Sandals, Shirt, Robe, Hat, Helm, Gloves, Arms, Leggings, Cloak, Quiver, Gorget, Sash, Belt, One handed Obsidian Sword, Two handed axe, Yumi, Tunic and Shield.

You are restricted only by your imagination. You can add a specific runeword on an item you like, and then add more properties using any of the other crafting systems.

All runewords that yield gold (they depend on Hris rune) are capped at 100gp, except for the Golden Fleece runeword, which is capped at 1000gp.

Hephaestus' notes allow you to combine up to 10 runes. There are 20 Mondain runes total. So potentially you could create 10^20=100,000,000,000,000,000,000 runewords...

Runewords: Creation and system mechanics

When you hit the create runeword button, a check is made to see if you have the right number of runes, right order and if the runeword created is one of the existing ones. This should save us some grief.

ATTENTION: Runes will not be replaced if you skrew anything up, including changing your mind because the rolls on the item are not what you wanted. Make sure you study all information here before you start crafting!

Not all properties can go into all possible items.

The item properties received will not be automated even though it is doable, so do not expect 10^20 runewords.

Specific Runewords will be added gradually, as we try to balance the system and make runewords based on phenomenal runes something special you can show off!

Runewords fall in three main groups depending on which runes were used to create it:

Common Runeword (only common runes used).

Rare Runeword (common and rare runes used).

Phenomenal Runeword (phenomenal and other runes used).

Common Runewords: Properties added to these items do not exceed caps.

Rare Runewords: Properties added to these items exceed caps by up to 50%.

Phenomenal Runewords: Properties added to these items exceed caps by up to 100%.

Finally, note that runewords are not standard items. They carry with them unique properties that can be triggered when you hit a foe (weapon runeword) or get hit by a foe (armour type runeword, anything not a weapon). See specific runewords below for specific details.

Mondain's Runes

The exclusive runword system is based on combining Mondain's Runes in order to create a new item.

In order of rarity the runes are:

Mie, Os, Nos, Sos, Tia, Asim, Hris, Fot, Cri, Thil, Kera, Dire, Met, Ste, Teche, Sha, Pla, Osm, Irid, Atha

Every rune adds specific properties and when combined with other runes in the proper order can yield additional properties on crafted items (runewords)!

To spare you a lot of grief, you can only make runewords if you put the runes in the right order.

To see what property a rune can provide, mouse over it (green description).

Properties per rune are as follows:

Mie Rune: Adds + 1 to a randomly chosen stat

Os Rune: Adds +1 to a randomly chosen resistance

Nos Rune: Adds a randomly chosen stat requirement

Sos Rune: Adds a randomly chosen spellcasting property

Tia Rune: Adds +1 to a randomly chosen regeneration stat

Asim Rune: Adds +1 to a randomly chosen leech weapon property

Hris Rune: Adds +10 gold reward

Fot Rune: Adds +1 to any single target abilities that cause fire damage

Cri Rune: Adds +1 to any single target abilities that cause cold damage

Thil Rune: Adds +1 to any single target abilities that cause poison damage

Kera Rune: Adds +1 to any single target abilities that cause energy damage

Dire Rune: Adds +1 to any single target abilities that cause direct damage

Met Rune: Turns a single target ability into an area of effect ability

Ste Rune: Adds a randomly selected slayer

Teche Rune: Adds +100 luck

Sha Rune: Adds +1 eater to a randomly selected resistance

Pla Rune: Adds +1 resonance to a randomly selected damage type

Osm Rune: Adds +1 to a randomly selected skill

Irid Rune: Adds +1 to a randomly chosen weapon special ability

Atha Rune: Makes the item indestructible

Mondain's Runes: Creatures that Drop them

Crafter Challenge: There is a flat, 1% chance that a Mondain's common rune (Mie, Os, Nos, Sos, Tia, Asim, Hris) is awarded when you succeed in a challenge!

Runes are split into 3 general rarity groups:

Common runes (Mie, Os, Nos, Sos, Tia, Asim, Hris, in order of rarity within group)

Rare runes (Fot, Cri, Thil, Kera, Dire, Met, Ste, in order of rarity within group)

Phenomenal runes (Teche, Sha, Pla, Osm, Irid, Atha, in order of rarity within group)

Not all creatures can drop all rarity groups!

Rune drop is affected first by the player's luck score up to 1%.

If this first check succeeds then the rune rarity group is checked:

Common rune group chance is 99.9%.

Rare rune group chance is 0.0999%.

Phenomenal rune group chance is 0.0001%.

Once the rarity group is chosen, the rune chosen to drop is affected by rune rarity within the group.

Only players who hurt a creature have a chance to get a drop.

Common runes may drop from common champion spawns (or from the quest maker): Barracoon, Semidar, Lord Oaks, Abyssal Infernal, Dragon Turtle, Neira, Ilhenir, Khal Ankur, Mephitis, Primeval Lich, Rikktor, Serado, Corander and The Dark Knight.

Rare and Common runes may drop from: All profession Villains, All peerless (Slasher Of Veils, Travesty, Stygian Dragon, Shimmering Effusion, Monstrous Interred Grizzle, Medusa, Lady Melisande, Dread Horn, Chief Paroxysmus), Vulcan, Jaskier, Erik the Red, Ivar the Boneless, Leif Erikson.

Phenomenal, Rare and Common runes may drop from: Ares, Genie, Hattori Hanzō, World Bosses.

World Boss: General rune drop rules apply, but the chances to drop are significantly higher.

Common rune group chance is 99.0%.

Rare rune group chance is 0.99%.

Phenomenal rune group chance is 0.01%.

World Bosses are one of only a few creatures that can drop phenomenal runes (Teche, Sha, Pla, Osm, Irid, Atha).
